Χρήστος Λάππας 25,081 Report post #37 Posted November 13, 2013 15 Most Dangerous Active Volcanoes in the World #1 Cotopaxi, Ecuador Cotopaxi is one of the tallest active volcanoes in the world, reaching a height of 19,347 ft. It is a part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, a chain of volcanoes around the Pacific plate. Quito, the capital ofEcuadorwith around 1 million inhabitants, is located 60 km south and Latacunga, a historical town that has already been destroyed four times by earthquakes cased by volcanic eruptions. Regardless, the locals kept rebuilding Latacunga in spite of the risk of potential full destruction. “There is no place like home,” they say. It is true even if your home sits on a powder keg. via www.equatortrekking.com #2 Sierra Negra, Galapagos islands, Ecuador Sierra Negra, or “The Black Mountain,” is an active volcano on Isabel Island, part of the Galapagos archipelago. It has the world’s second largest crater, measuring 6.82 miles in diameter. The majority of the 2200 population of islanders live in the town of Puerto Villamil on the southern shore of the volcano. via i25.servimg.com #3 Mount Etna, Italy Etna is an active volcano located on the eastern coast of Sicily, Italy. It is the tallest active volcano on the European continent, but its height cannot be accurately measured because it varies due to volcanic activity. Lava spews from the volcano every three months on average. Despite constant volcanic activity, Etna is a popular resort in both winter and summer. via www.hoteljonic.com #4 The Papandayan Volcano, Indonesia The Papandayan Volcano is a pretty unusual volcano. It is one of the places where people can actually get very close with this natural time bomb. The Mount Papandayan area is a popular tourist site where people can walk across the crater and view phenomena such as bubbling mud pools, steam vents, and sulfur deposits. Interesting, though dangerous. via photos.travellerspoint.com #5 Santa Maria, Guatemala Located 80 miles away from the city of Guatemala, Santa Maria has been the most active volcanos since the 20th century, with numerous volcanic eruptions happened with these 10 decades. The latest eruption occurred in January of 2011. Santa Maria’s eruptions have the potential of creating tsunamis. via geology.com #6 Mauna Loa, Hawaii Located in the island of Hawaii, in terms of volume and surface area, Mauna Loa is the largest volcano in the world. It is one of the five volcanoes that make up the Island of Hawaii. It has an average 6-year eruption cycle, but its last eruption occurred in 1984. An even more, potentially more devastating, though rarer, hazard posed by Mauna Loa is the potential for massive landslides triggered by a collapse of the volcano’s flanks. via listdose.com #7 Mount Vesuvius, Italy Mount Vesuvius in Campagnia, Italy, is the only volcano to have erupted on the European mainland within the last hundred years. Due to its history of activity, it is considered one of the world’s most dangerous volcanoes. Its most destructive, most famous and most massive explosion happened in 79 AD, and it led to the annihilation of the Roman cities of Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Stabiae. Mount Vesuvius is also the most densely populated volcano in the world with around 3 million people living relatively close to its crater! via upload.wikimedia.org #8 Taal Volcano, Philippines This volcano is like a bomb inside a bomb. Taal volcano, located on the island of Luzon, is also known as “Volcano inside Volcano,” because the lake which surrounds the volcano was once the mouth of a volcano. The Taal volcano is lies only 31 mile away from the capital, Manila. Notably, it is one of the largest in the world yet the lowest in height at the same time. Tourists and locals who come nearby the volcano are warned not to get too close. via pod.neshtoto.com #9 Sakurajima Volcano, Japan Sakurajima, a former island now connected to the mainland, has one of the most active volcanoes in Japan. It is often referred to as the Vesuvius of the east, and has been erupting almost constantly with thousands of small explosions occur each year. The city of Kagoshima has 700,000 residents, and is situated just a few kilometers from the volcano. via apod.nasa.gov #10 Galeras Volcano, Colombia Galeras, located near the southern Colombian border with Ecuador, has been an active volcano for at least a million years. Moreover, it has been erupting almost every year since 2000. What is really dangerous about Galeras is that the frequency of its eruption is virtually unpredictable. It is definitely among the least safe places to go on a hiking trip. via img137.imageshack.us #11 Yellowstone Caldera, USA Underneath the beauty of Yellowstone National Park lies a super-volcano that has the potential to alter the course of human history, and wipe out the Western United States. Super volcanoes are a phenomenon that has never been observed by mankind. However, scientists have calculated that a Yellowstone eruption could kill 87,000 people immediately, and might even trigger massive tectonic activity that will force other active volcanoes to erupt. The saddest thing is that even with sophisticated equipment, scientists still cannot predict when an eruption might happen. via www.wired.com #12 Mount Nyiragongo, Democratic Republic of the Congo Mount Nyiragongo is one of the most active volcanoes in the African continent. When the crater’s walls ruptured in 1977, lava flowed towards localvillages killing approximately thousands of village dwellers. The average velocity of the flowing lava was around 37 miles per hour. Can you imagine lava flowing at the speed of the car! via wordlesstech.com #13 Ulawun Volcano, Papua New Guinea Ulawun is considered to be one of the most dangerous volcanoes in Papua New Guinea. One of the eruptions which occurred in 1980, ejected ash up to 11 miles and destroyed an area of nearly 7.5 square miles. The activity of the volcano is visible even on satellite images. Despite all the risks, several thousand people still live near the volcano. via volcanocafe.files.wordpress.com #14 Popocatepetl Volcano, Mexico Popocatepetl is the second highest peak in Mexico, and it is situated at an altitude of 17,802 ft. Being only 35 miles away from Mexico City, its activity could put the lives of nearly 9 million people in danger. Popocatepetl loosely translates as “smoking mountain.” Its most recent eruption was in 2000. Luckily, it did not become a major disaster, thanks to timely preventive actions. via i1.wp.com #15 Mount Merapi, Indonesia Mount Merapi is a conical volcano located in Indonesia. Its name, which means “mountain of fire,” confirms with the volcanic activity it had done for the past 10,000 years. The nearby city of Yogyakarta is the residence for thousands of inhabitants. Typically, minor eruptions occur once every two or three years, and larger ones every 10–15 years or so. The volcanic eruption occurred in 2006, and claimed 130 lives, leaving over 300,000 people homeless. via www.smashinglists.com Πηγή: http://news.nster.co...tent92.html?b=0 1 Quote Νίφει! Η τελευταία μεγάλη έκρηξη της Αίτνας, θυμίζει η Daily Mail, ήταν το 1992 όταν ένα ποτάμι καυτής λάβας κύλησε από τις πλαγιές της. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WGTGBsWaY2U newsbeast.gr 3 Quote moments ...Have a nice day before a bastard comes and fucks it up... Χρήστος Λάππας 25,081 Report post #48 Posted February 6, 2014 Top 10 Stunning Volcanoes Around the World They are active, dangerous, sometimes causing devastating results, but also creating a fertile soil around them – the volcanoes have been worshiped and feared for ages. Even today some locals make sacrifices to “calm” the volcano down. Here are ten amazing volcanoes, that are active, impressive and definitely worth seeing in your lifetime. 1. Mauna Loa, HawaiiMauna Loa is one of five volcanoes that form the Island of Hawaii in the U.S. state of Hawaiʻi in the Pacific Ocean. Mauna Loa is the largest subaerial volcano in both mass and volume, and has historically been considered the largest volcano on Earth. It is an active shield volcano, with a volume estimated at approximately 18,000 cubic miles, although its peak is about 120 feet lower than that of its neighbor, Mauna Kea. 2. Mount Fuji, Tokyo, JapanMount Fuji, located on Honshu Island, is the highest mountain in Japan at 3,776.24 m (12,389 ft). An active stratovolcano that last erupted in 1707–08, Mount Fuji lies about 100 kilometres (60 mi) south-west of Tokyo, and can be seen from there on a clear day. Mount Fuji's exceptionally symmetrical cone, which is snow-capped several months a year, is a well-known symbol of Japan and it is frequently depicted in art and photographs, as well as visited by sightseers and climbers. It is one of Japan's "Three Holy Mountains" along with Mount Tate and Mount Haku; it is a Special Place of Scenic Beauty, a Historic Site, and was added to the World Heritage List as a Cultural Site on June 22nd, 2013. 3. Mayon Volcano, Albay, PhilippinesMayon Volcano, also known as Mount Mayon, is an active volcano in the province of Albay, on the island of Luzon in the Philippines. Renowned as the "perfect cone" because of its almost symmetric conical shape, Mayon forms the northern boundary of Legazpi City, the largest city in terms of population in the Bicol Region. The mountain was first declared as a national park and a protected landscape on July 20, 1938 in the country. It was reclassified and renamed as Mayon Volcano Natural Park in the year 2000. 4. Mount St. Helens, Washington, USAMount St. Helens (known as Lawetlat'la to the indigenous Cowlitz people, and Loowit to the Klickitat) is an active stratovolcano located in Skamania County, Washington, in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States. It is 96 miles (154 km) south of Seattle, Washington, and 50 miles (80 km) northeast of Portland, Oregon. Χρήστος Λάππας 25,081 Report post #49 Posted April 5, 2014 Ecuador volcano throws up spectacular ash plume Tungurahua means "Throat of Fire" in the local Quechua language A volcano just south of Ecuador's capital Quito has erupted, creating a spectacular plume of ash, 10km (six miles) high. The Tungurahua volcano created the huge cloud on Friday in an eruption that lasted just five minutes. The volcano has been erupting since 1999, but has been particularly active in the last two months. Tungurahua is one of eight active volcanoes in Ecuador, which lies in the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire. Footage of the volcano's plume of smoke The view from Banos has looked almost apocalyptic at times The nearby town of Banos has been repeatedly evacuated because of eruptions in recent years Πηγή: http://www.bbc.com/news/world-latin-america-26901834 (κλικ για ένα σύντομο βίντεο από το BBC) 1 Quote Νίφει! - See more at: http://perierga.gr/2...h.YmkGmZBk.dpuf Πηγή: http://perierga.gr/2014/04/εκεί-που-η-λάβα-πέφτει-στον-ωκεανό/ 1 Quote Νίφει!
