With weather, avalanche danger and crowds, the first line of the year is met with difficult decision making, trepidation and the need for patience. As the crews change and time goes by, the reward becomes that much sweeter. Featured guests include Pep Fujas, Drew Peterson, Joe Johnson, Weston Shirey and Cinematographer for The FIFTY, Bjarne Salen.

Out in the rugged dusty wild of Nevada, lies an infamously aesthetic couloir named Terminal Cancer. While skied very very often, the crew takes on the attempt to fulfill a quest for "First Descents". The sarcasm runs deeper than the bootpack and the humor longer than the chute itself. Skiing is meant to be fun, so why so serious all the time Reinhold? Starring Cody Townsend, Elyse Saugstad, Connery Lundin, Weston Shirey and Bjarne Salen

After a quick jaunt to the deserts of Nevada, the crew returns to Utah for a long walk and narrow ski. The goal, to ski a line that many have gawked at but few have gone to. Joining up with Cody is Pep Fujas, who fulfills a dream 16 years in the making and Ian Provo, a Wasatch backcountry ninja. Starring Pep Fujas, Ian Provo and Cody Townsend

In the small town of Pemberton, British Columbia, the hulking north face of Mt. Currie dominates the skyline. Yet even after a decade of winters spent skiing in Pemberton, Townsend has never been up or down the mountain that steals your gaze from every spot in town. Though most often skied with a helicopter drop, Townsend joins Jon Johnston and Chris Rubens on a foot powered slog up and down it's 7,000+ foot face. Mt. Currie doesn't come easily though as crucial decision making, route finding and an exhausting day make the this classic as truly special one.

A last minute decision to go to a place not known for mid-winter steep skiing descents takes the crew to the Rocky Mountains of Canada. Yet just getting there is half the battle with sketchy highways, early cold mornings and a 13km walk just to get to the base of the infamously beautiful Aemmer Couloir in Banff National Park. Starring Chris Rubens, Kevin Hjertaas, Bjarne Salen and Cody Townsend

North of Pemberton, BC lies a big, daunting and dangerous peak called Joffre. In a project filled with many intimidating lines, Joffre presents the first fear inducing challenge of the season. Low snow and sketchy steeps are met with a nearly tragic ending that teaches us all that bad things can happen in the mountains.

At the end of a fateful day, Cody Townsend and Bjarne Salen, witnessed a fall down the 60+ degree couloir called Central on Joffre Peak near Pemberton, BC. The Landry Line off Pyramid Peak near Aspen, CO is considered a test piece of ski mountaineering in the Rockies. First skied by Chris Landry in 1978, it was a futuristic, world renowned and seemingly unrepeatable line. 28 years later, the second descent by Chris Davenport, Ted Mahon and Niel Biedleman ushered in a new generation of skiers and snowboarders making it the top of their bucket list. It's a line of dramatic exposure, puckering steepness and necessitates an entire package of skills to get up and down. After a historic avalanche cycle in Colorado, the conditions turned stellar and stable, leading Townsend to join up with the author of the book, "The Fifty Classic Ski Descents of North America" Penn Newhard and local ski mountaineer and randonee racer Pete Gaston.

This is Episode 13 of The FIFTY, a project following Cody Townsend as he attempts to climb and ski all fifty of the lines and mountains chronicled in the book, "The 50 Classic Ski Descents of North America." The series documents Townsend's journey's, travels, challenges and each line and mountain listed in the book. It's a journey through the most majestic mountains and ski lines in North America along with a unique insight into how skiers make decisions in the backcountry, how they plan, navigate and safely move through the mountains and the people that dedicate their lives to the mountains.

The FIFTY has reached an important point, the end of the 2019 winter / spring ski season! It's been challenging, thrilling, adventurous, hilarious, exhausting and educational. As we transfer into summer, this video goes into the current state of the episodes, the plans for this fall, an AMA (Ask Me Anything) from the fans and one very important question at the end.

It's a long video, so play it as a podcast or in the background while filling out your excel spreadsheets. Thanks again for the rad winter and subscribe to be the first to know when the episodes begin to be released in the fall.

The FIFTY has always been about learning, so who better to learn from than the couple, Mark & Janelle Smiley, who attempted to climb all fifty of the Fifty Classic Climbs of North America based upon the book of the same name that inspired the ski-centric book Townsend is now following. While ascending and descending the classic East Face of the Middle Teton in Wyoming, Townsend takes to learning from the lessons of the wise couple about their ups and downs, struggles and triumphs and their mentality around leaving such an audacious "un-finished" project.

This is Episode 14 and line 14 complete of The FIFTY, a project following Cody Townsend as he attempts to climb and ski all fifty of the lines and mountains chronicled in the book, "The 50 Classic Ski Descents of North America." The series documents Townsend's journey's, travels, challenges and each line and mountain listed in the book. With an impeding storm on the horizon, the push to ski two classic lines in Colorado in back-to-back days presents one of the most exhausting challenges of The Fifty to date. The two classics, the iconic and photographic North Maroon Peak near Aspen, Colorado and the far-flung and aesthetic Holy Cross Couloir near Vail, Colorado are in stellar and stable condition in April of 2019 and create for some of the best skiing conditions possible on big ski mountaineering style lines. Cody Townsend is joined in this special double episode by Aspen locals Pete Gaston, Anton Sponar and Greg Strokes for the two day adventure in the Colorado backcountry.

The most famous mountain in the world that nobody knows happens to be beyond just an icon on a beer can, it happens to be a classic ski descent. Wilson Peak, mostly recognized for being on a Coors Light can, sits outside of Telluride, CO in the San Juan Mountains. At the tail end of a month long run of some of the hardest lines in the continental US, the crew is exhausted and happy for a nice warm day of spring ski touring...the weather had a different idea for the day though. Joined by Telluride local Greg Hope and reunited with Anton Sponar and photographer Weston Shirey, Townsend and Bjarne hope to complete an epic run in Colorado with one last iconic mountain.
