Appeal to Emmanuel Macron to open the ski resorts at Christmas
Mr. President of the Republic,
The skiers, for whom we are the spokesperson, out of solidarity with the ski world, that of the mountain valleys that you appreciate so much, that of a structuring economy for these forgotten lands of industry and the tertiary sector, hands over to your decision.
You, Mr. President, experienced skier, who know these areas well but also the drastically seasonal operation of ski resorts, you cannot allow an entire section of this economy to collapse. While in Europe, we already ski in Finland, Sweden or even in nearby Switzerland, or when governments have decided on the next opening date for ski resorts, as in Austria or Andorra, we French remain in expectation. And even in the most total concern if we stick to the statements of members of the Government who leave more than a doubt about the possibility of skiing at Christmas. Do you want, Mr. President, you the first of the French, that your fellow citizens go to spend their week of skiing in Switzerland, Italy, Andorra or Austria? For whose benefit?
Winter has its rules: snow arrives in the mountains in December and leaves in April. Very few weeks to keep winter tourism alive, without any alternative since every day lost is desperately lost, without any other economic alternative. At a time when ski resorts and of course all the industrial fabric induced and their corollaries, will already be strongly impacted by the absence of international flows, amputating the season of one of its highlights would be deadly. And what signal is given to the 7 million French skiers if not to encourage them to switch to other activities? Do you prefer to legislate in order to oblige companies in which the State is a shareholder to locate their head offices in these mountain valleys in order to replace the void left by the decline of the tourism sector? Our mountains are crumbling, our glaciers are melting, do we really need something like a coup de grace? This uncertainty about the possibility of opening ski resorts is all the more incomprehensible as it seems as unique as it is iniquitous: skiing is an outdoor sport, which our neighbors have understood. Of course, we understand that some businesses remain closed and we express our solidarity with them, but it is better to save an economic structure and come to the aid of unfortunately closed establishments, bars, nightclubs or even restaurant owners, than to destroy an economic structure. ecosystem so difficult to build over the years. That some do not understand it in your government because they are not skiers, quite simply, but you! And rest assured, ski accidents only exceptionally end in intensive care. We might as well close the roads… Without your support, we won't be skiing at Christmas. Without your support, we will slide, but on the wrong track. Skiing is unique in that it is not just a futile hobby, it structures isolated territories. It seems that you have to take advantage of the "good air" of the mountains: know that skiing is your oxygen.
A skier president

Consultation of stakeholders and elected officials of mountain resorts
The Prime Minister wished to consult today the main professional organizations and elected officials concerned on the opening of mountain resorts for the Christmas holidays.
Beyond the sports or outdoor activities offered by the mountain resorts, the life of the resorts itself in the time of Covid-19 is a matter of particular concern for the Government.
At this stage, this question has not yet been settled, the two options still being considered given the uncertainties about the evolution of the health situation.
The meeting made it possible to examine more precisely the conditions for the implementation of the different scenarios, whether it be the definition of a specific health protocol or, in the event of closure, the methods of economic and social support of actors, companies and seasonal workers.
Taking into account the preparation time necessary to allow a possible opening for the end-of-year holidays, a decision will be made in the next ten days. It will be done according to the evolution of the health situation which must constitute the essential criterion and while ensuring to be as coherent as possible with our neighboring countries.
