makalu 10 Report post Posted October 27, 2004 Δημητρη, δεν ειδα το σκ τιποτα παντως που την ειχα ‘στησει’ στο Eurosport… Καποια πρωτα αποτελεσματα! Women’s 1st Giant Slalom from Solden "The summer has been too short", winner of the opening World Cup Giant Slalom Anja Paerson commented to the media regarding what she had been up to between the seasons. On this performance, her fifth successive World Cup Giant Slalom win, it was too short for the rest of the field as they trailed in her wake. With a record crowd of over 12,500 watching on the slopes of the Rettenbach Glacier, Soelden, Austria, this women’s Giant Slalom kicked off the 2004 - 5 Alpine Skiing World Cup. Nine nations filled the top eleven places at the start of the second run yet sadly Chemmy Alcott was unable to place in the top 30 after the first run. The twenty two year old from Twickenham produced a stunning performance here last year yet today was the start of a long season for her as she attacks the World Cup on three fronts: Her favoured speed events, Downhill and Super G, start in earnest in late November over in North America. Alcott made a mess of things at the fourth gate and slide across the snow losing precious time on a flat section of the course. "Everybody talks about the steep here in Solden but I made a silly mistake before it. This made the steep very interesting," rued Alcott. With over four seconds lost due to her mistake, Alcott knows that better things are to come as the season progresses. "You always want the season to start well so this is a disappointment but not the end of the world." Having made the mistake at the top it was difficult for Alcott to make up the time with the rest of the field, especially with Paerson in such dominating form. Tanja Poutiainen (Finland) scored her best result in Giant Slalom and remarked: "I was ready to start the season two weeks ago!" For the second year running Maria Jose Rienda Contreras (Spain) took third, despite suffering from flu. Although Poutiainen cut the lead marginally on the second run, it is Paerson who holds all the aces at the moment: "I love the competition and love to fight!" Chemmy Alcott was left frustrated but eager for the speed events to start. Alcott knew at the end that had she not made the mistake at the top, a second run was within her grasp. With speed training starting now Alcott will then be making use of the British Olympic Association facilities in Cyprus for fitness training and then heading to North America.
