Russian Miner Spends His Breaks Taking Photos Of Foxes In The Arctic Circle

Russia’s remote north-eastern Chukotka region is an inhospitable arctic tundra, but even in this brutal landscape, Russian photographer Ivan Kislov can find beautiful signs of life among the foxes that live and hunt here in the wild. He agreed to talk to Bored Panda and tell us more about his amazing photos.

Kislov, who lives in the north-eastern port city of Magadan, works in Chukotka as a mining engineer. When he has time during his long shifts, he looks to photography for “relaxation from routine.” He likes to go on “hikes to inaccessible places, raftings,” or just simple walking tours to “observe the wildlife.”

Though he takes pictures of everything from bears and reindeer to wolves and stoats, Kislov says the foxes are often very willing models: “Foxes are curious and can come very close, and I shoot with wide angle and telephoto lenses.”

Zen Foxes: Photographer Documents Wild Foxes Enjoying Themselves

These photos by Roeselien Raimond, a Dutch nature photographer who specializes in taking beautiful photos of wild foxes, show how foxes are experts at enjoying the little things in life.

“I love them best when they’re totally at ease: free from pain, fear, cold, hunger or any other discomfort,” she told Bored Panda in an interview. “Of course they have their duties calling as well. But once that rabbit is consumed, the territory defined and taken care of important things like procreation and upbringing, it’s time to relax.”

“There’s a contradiction going on when it comes to capturing Zen Foxes: the harder you try, the more you’ll move away from your goal. If you are too eager, an animal will sense that eagerness and will remain alert,” Raimond said. “I learned to do as foxes do, just being there and see what might happen. And in the mean time, I just enjoy smelling some fresh air and feeling the sun on my skin.”

όπου την χτύπησε αυτοκίνητο... αλλά οι περαστικοί κάλεσαν

3 Foxes Decided To Live In My Backyard During Winter

Last winter, 3 red foxes decided to take up residence in my back yard, and I didn’t mind at all. It was one of the most amazing experiences I’ve ever had with wildlife.

I live on beautiful Prince Edward Island, Canada, in Charlottetown. Our summer months are renowned worldwide, and people come from all over to celebrate great local food and beaches as far as the eye can see. Our winters, on the other hand, are brutal. Last year we set a new record for snowfall – we accumulated just under 550 centimeters (just over 215 inches) of snow.

Urban foxes are common in Charlottetown, and luckily for me, I had three to photograph all winter long. They would show up in the morning, jump on top of the garden sheds in my backyard and sleep on them. All day. When the sun started to set, they would leave again, off to hunt in the night. As a way to charge them rent, I would go outside with them for about an hour every other day and take their pictures.

Μαλλον αυτος αποφασισε να μεινει στην χειμερινη διαμονη των αλεπουδων... Εχω περασει απο Prince Edward Island 20 Μαρτιου και δεν υπηρχε ψυχη. Ολα τα σπιτια (σε πανεμορφες τοποθεσιες) δεν ειχαν ανοιχτο δρομο για τον αυτοκινητοδρομο, το οποιο σημαινει οτι τον χειμωνα δεν κατοικουνται...

Υπάρχουν φιλικές αλεπούδες και στην Ελλάδα.

Ή μήπως τις τραβάνε τα σκουπίδια μας (που δεν πρέπει να υπάρχουν) και τα "δώρα" μας (που δεν πρέπει να τους δίνουμε);

Στη φωτό μια αλεπουδίτσα που σύχναζε πριν 3 χρόνια στο καταφύγιο Φλαμπούρι της Πάρνηθας, κατά τη διάρκεια της καλοκαιρινής παιδικής κατασκήνωσης.

Baby Foxes That Are Too Cute To Be True

International Baby Fox Day doesn't actually exist, but looking at these pictures, we think that it should. Sparrows get a day (March 20). Penguins get a day (April 25). Turtles get a day (May 23). So why not baby foxes? We have no idea, but in the absence of an international observance for these unbearably cute critters, Bored Panda has compiled this list in homage to one of nature's most photogenic mammals. It's guaranteed to make a rainy day sunny and a sunny day sunnier, so wherever you are and whatever you're doing, prepare to have your day made better.

Random fox fact! Did you know that a male fox is actually called a dog? No, neither did we. But it's true. A male dog is not however called a fox, despite what you might think.
