Τι μου θυμιζει το Meribel!!! Μέναμε δίπλα στο La Tania γιατί ήταν φθηνότερο. Κάθε μέρα ξεκινούσαμε ένα ταξίδι. Courchevel1850-Meribel-Val Thorens.

By the end of the day, the mostly British-run bars in resort centre and around the Rond Point are usually packed with partying youth.

In your boots

Youth-magnet après bar La Folie Douce (lafoliedouce.com) is at the mid-station of La Saulire. Bigger than its sister bar in Val Thorens and in an equally spectacular mountainside location, the formula is the same: thumpingly loud pop music with younger skiers and boarders going crazy on table tops from 3pm until 5pm. Also serves pricey but decent food at lunchtime.

Rond Point is an established meeting place for twenty- and thirty-somethings, with a happy hour 4pm till 5pm. The ‘Ronny’ tends to attract the seasonaires as it's reasonably good value. Party time complete with live bands is from 5pm to 7pm, so there’s a surge of people from La Folie Douce after it closes at 5pm. Conveniently, it’s only one run away (down the blue Marmotte). Also open for lunch.

Pre-dinner drinks

Barometer (meribelbarometer.com) in the middle of town has an English pub atmosphere yet a wide selection of wines. It occasionally has music but is generally a bit more relaxed than busier places nearby. For a more sedate drink (although the music cranks up later), try Le Poste de Secours near the tourist office in the centre of Méribel, which attracts a slightly older crowd.

Barometer_3567366b.jpg
Barometer is a top spot for pre-dinner drinks

Aux Petits Oignons (petitsoignonsmeribel.com) at Altitude 1600 is primarily a restaurant, but the bar stays open all afternoon (crèpes are still available). An evening menu is served from 7pm, except on Mondays when there’s live music from 10pm (usually acoustic and chilled out, rather than loud and pumping).

Live music

Le Pub below the two-star Doron hotel (hoteldoron.com), also near the Chaudanne, has live bands, pumping music and big screens for football and major sports events. Find it opposite the Tourist Office in Méribel, at the foot of the escalator into town.

Jack’s Bar (jacksbarmeribel.com) has stand-up comedy, live music and plenty of drinks promotions including two-for-one cocktail hours. Located right at the bottom by the Chaudanne, bands perform at around 5 or 6pm and later in the evening too. Popular with seasonnaires.

O’Sullivans Club (osullivans-pubs.com) on Route Albert Gacon is a 10-minute walk from the town centre and opens from 10pm to 4am, with free entry before midnight, sometimes with DJs or live bands.

Méribel Valley, home to the resort's local slopes, is central to the Trois Vallées ski area, one of the largest linked ski areas in the world. It has around 150km of pistes in its own right (the majority blue, with around 25 per cent red and under 10 per cent green or black), but offers access to a total of over 600km of pistes served by 169 lifts with more than 321 designated runs and around 130km of cross country tracks.

Its sheltered setting means its good selection of blues and reds leading into resort are protected by the steep-sided mountains and enjoy more settled weather conditions than in the adjacent broader valleys.

For beginners, the gentle green slopes at Altiport, reached by the Morel chair from Altiport 1,600, and the nursery slopes at Rond Point beneath it make a good starting point. Intermediates can enjoy some of the area’s best pistes south of Mottaret, at the head of the valley, accessed by the Plattieres gondola from Mottaret. Dedicated beginner and young children's areas also include La Sittelle, accessed by the Plattières gondola, Le Rossignol, accessed by the Chatelet chair and Le Doron at the foot of the pistes in Mottaret.

ski-ESF-kids-MERIB_3567336b.jpg
Méribel has a plethora of ski schools, including the ESF PHOTO: J M Gouedard

For the more experienced, the red Combe Vallon piste from the top of the Mont du Vallon gondola at 2,952m is a good option, or the Face run (created for the downhill races in the 1992 Olympics) from the top of the Roc de Fer at 2,290m.

However, with the exception of beginners and those who’ve had a couple of weeks' experience, the joy of staying in Méribel is using the resort as a springboard for the area as a whole. Usefully, local lift passes of two days or more can be upgraded on a daily basis to include the whole of the Trois Vallées, but, unless the weather is forecast to be particularly poor, most people opt for the straightforward Trois Vallées pass.

Queues are a big issue in Méribel: if possible avoid the Chaudanne at the start of ski school (usually around 9.15am) and the runs to Mottaret in the late afternoon, when overcrowding is also a problem.

Lift passes

There are a number of lift pass options: Trois Vallées passes range from a half day to 14 days (or a season pass), with six-day prices at €289 for adults (13-64 years), €234 for children (five to 12 years) and €260.10 for seniors (65 to 75 years). This covers Courchevel, Mottaret and Val Thorens as well as Méribel. A family Trois Vallées pass is available for two parents accompanied by two to seven children (aged five to 17 years) at €234 per person. Discounts are available at the beginning and end of the season.

If you’re happy to stick to the local slopes in Méribel or if the weather’s not looking reliable enough for a Trois Vallées pass, a six-day pass will cost €239 for an adult, €194 for a child and €215.10 for a senior. The family rate is €194 each. You can upgrade your Méribel Valley pass (as long as it’s a minimum two-day pass and within its validity) to a Trois Vallées for one day at a rate of €33.

Lift pass offices are at La Chaudanne, Le Rond Point, Altiport and Méribel Village. Regulars should consider a Trois Vallées Liberty Pass where you hit the slopes as and when you want, then payment is taken directly from your bank account at the end of the day. You accumulate reductions and the ninth day is free (every sixth day thereafter).

New for this season, Trois Vallées, Paradiski and Espace Killy are offering a combined ski pass at €340 for six days.

Terrain parks

Moonpark is suitable for all levels, half way up the mountain on Tougnète that leaves from Chaudanne, and next to to the Arpasson draglift. DC Area 43 Snowpark is 1,200m long with mini-skate ramp, rails and an airbag. It’s found under the Plattières gondola, and served by the Chatelet lift above Mottaret. This is where DC Shred Days take place in April for snowboarders.

ski-moonpark-MERIB_3567337b.jpg
The Moon Park has lines for different ability levels

P’tit Moon is a mini-boardercross with banked turns for children aged seven to 12 years and located above the mid-station of the Rhodos gondola, which leaves from Chaudanne, and served by the Cotes draglift.

Moon Wild, also on the western slopes, by Altiport, is a wooded area for children with animal sculptures and information boards explaining the local flora and fauna. Other areas for small children include the Inuit Village accessed by the Altiport chairlift or Rhodos Gondola.

Ski schools

ESF (esf-meribel.com) is the resort’s largest school with four meeting points and various packages including cross-country, telemark and snowshoeing as well as skiing and snowboarding. Group sizes are limited to 12 children or 10 adults; five mornings of group tuition in two and a half hour sessions from €200.

New Generation (skinewgen.com) was one of the first British schools to set up in the Alps, and offers five mornings of two-hour group sessions from €199, starting either 9.15 or 11.30am.

Magic in Motion (magic-meribel.com) has a particularly broad range of tuition options including racing, speed-riding and acrobatic ‘Freakstyle’ classes, as well as standard skiing and snowboard tuition. Five mornings of group tuition in two-hour sessions from €210. Children are well catered for throughout the week with a Kids Fun Factory on Friday, including multi-fun Olympics and a ‘Little Mice’ group for four and five year olds.

Sweet Snowsports (sweetsnowsports.com) is a British ski school offering private and group lessons, as well as “Experience Days”, a full day of exploration, from €90 per person.

Snowboarding

Cab9 (cab9snowboarding.com) is a British snowboarding school providing “laidback” lessons. Five mornings of two-hour sessions at €199.

ski-dlight-GOPR117_3567335b.jpg
Snow D'Light operates in Méribel

RTM Snowboarding (rtmsnowboarding.com) promises to take snowboarders from Learner to Explorer with three-hour group sessions at £195 for five days. Other schools include BASS (britishskischool.com); ESI Snow Systems (snow-systems.com); the Development Centre (tdcski.com); Snow D’Light (snowdlight.com) and Parallel Lines (parallel-lines.com).

Other activities

Off-piste skiing, ski touring and heliskiing are offered by the ESF, Magic, and Snow Systems. Mountain Tracks (mountaintracks.co.uk) also offers off-piste skiing and tailor-made ski adventures. Guides available from guides-courchevel-meribel.com. There are 33km of cross-country tracks in Méribel Valley. Ski-joëring (skiing behind a horse) and horse-riding in the snow are available at Le Coeur Equestre (coeurequestremeribel.com).
