Υιός και Πατέρας!

 

Η ιστορία με λίγα λόγια πάει κάπως έτσι.

Ένα ζευγάρι αποκτά ένα παιδί που έχει σοβαρή ανατομική αναπηρία. Οι γιατροί

τους λένε ότι το παιδί δεν θα έχει νοητική ανάπτυξη και δεν τους δίνουν

ελπίδες για το μέλλον του.

Ο μπαμπάς του σε πείσμα όλων των αντίθετων απόψεων αποκτά ένα κώδικα

επικοινωνίας μαζί του και το παιδί αναπτύσσεται νοητικά κανονικά και

πηγαίνει στο σχολείο. Ο μικρός κάποια στιγμή ζητά από τον μπαμπά του να

αθληθεί. Ο μπαμπάς δεν έχει καμία σχέση με τον αθλητισμό και αρχίζει να

προπονείται κουβαλώντας τον μικρό του γιό στα χέρια για να έχει κι αυτός την

χαρά του αθλητισμού!!!

Το εκπληκτικό? Ο μπαμπάς πλέον έχει τρέξει δεκάδες μαραθώνιους και ironman

πάντοτε με τη συντροφιά του γιού του!!

Το video δείχνει τη συμμετοχή τους σ' ένα ironman. Ο Dick Hoyt κολυμπάει

έχοντας δεμένο πάνω του το γιό του σε βάρκα (!), μετά ποδηλατεί 180

χιλιόμετρα (!) με το γιο του σε ειδική θέση πάνω στο ποδήλατο και τέλος

τρέχει κι ένα μαραθώνιο σπρώχνοντας το αναπηρικό καρότσι του γιου του!! Μια

συγκινητική και απίστευτα δυνατή ιστορία.

Με αφορμη το παραπανω συγκλονιστικο post του Χρηστου, θυμηθικα και κατι αλλο που ειδα προσφατα.

Μετά από μια εκπληκτική βραδιά στη Μαλακάσα

την Πέμπτη, ξύπνησα με πολύ όμορφη διάθεση το πρωί.Έγινε, ακόμα, καλύτερη όταν

διάβασα το παρακάτω κομμάτι στο korfiatis.blogspot.com.

«Δύο άνδρες και οι δύο σοβαρά άρρωστοι, έμεναν στο ίδιο δωμάτιο ενός νοσοκομείου.

Ο ένας άνδρας αφηνόταν να σηκωθεί όρθιος στο κρεβάτι του, για μία ώρα κάθε απόγευμα, για να κατέβουν υγρά από

τα πνευμόνια του. Το κρεβάτι του βρισκόταν δίπλα στο μοναδικό παράθυρο του δωματίου. Ο άλλος άνδρας έπρεπε να περνά όλη την ώρα

του ξαπλωμένος. Οι άνδρες μιλούσαν για ώρες, αδιάκοπα. Μιλούσαν για τις γυναίκες τους και τις οικογένειές

τους, τα σπίτια τους, τις δουλειές τους, τη θητεία τους στο στρατό, πού πήγαν διακοπές. Κάθε απόγευμα, όταν ο άνδρας, δίπλα στο παράθυρο,

μπορούσε να σηκωθεί, περνούσε την ώρα του περιγράφοντας στον «συγκάτοικό» του όλα όσα μπορούσε

να δει έξω από το παράθυρο. Ο άνδρας, στο άλλο κρεβάτι, άρχιζε να ζει για αυτές τις περιόδους μίας ώρας, όπου μπορούσε να ανοιχθεί και να ζωογονηθεί ο δικός του κόσμος από όλη τη δραστηριότητα και χρώμα από τον κόσμο εκεί έξω. Το παράθυρο έβλεπε ένα πάρ κο με μια όμορφη λιμνούλα. Πάπιες και κύκνοι έπαιζαν στα νερά, ενώ παιδιά αρμένιζαν τα καραβάκια τους. Ερωτευμένοι νέοι περπατούσαν, χέρι χέρι, ανάμεσα σε κάθε χρώματος λουλούδιακαι μια ωραία θέα του ορίζοντα της πόλης μπορούσε να ειδωθεί στο βάθος. Καθώς ο άνδρας στο παράθυρο περιέ-

γραφε όλο αυτό με θεσπέσια λεπτομέρεια, ο άνδρας στο άλλο μέρος του δωματίου έκλεινε τα μάτια του και φανταζόταν αυτό το γραφικό σκηνικό. Ένα ζεστό απόγευμα, ο άνδρας στο παράθυρο περιέγραφε μία παρέλαση που περνούσε. Αν και ο άλλος άνδρας δεν μπορούσε να ακούσει τη φιλαρμονική - μπορούσε να τη δει στο μάτι του μυαλού του καθώς ο κύριος, δίπλα στο παράθυρο, το απεικόνιζε με παραστατικές

λέξεις. Μέρες, βδομάδες και μήνες πέρασαν. Ένα πρωί, η πρωινή νοσοκόμα ήρθε να τους φέρει νερά για το μπάνιο τους, μόνο για να δει το άψυχο σώμα του άνδρα δίπλα στο παράθυρο, ο οποίος πέθα νε ειρηνικά στον ύπνο του. Ξαφνιάστηκε και κάλεσε τους θεράποντες ιατρούς, να πάρουν το νεκρό σώμα. Όταν θεωρήθηκε πρέπον, ο άλλος άνδρας ρώτησε αν θα μπορούσε να μεταφερθεί δίπλα στο παράθυρο.

Η νοσοκόμα, ευχαρίστως, έκανε την αλλαγή, και, εφ’ όσον σιγουρεύτηκε ότι ο άνδρας αισθανόταν άνετα, τον άφησε

μόνο. Σιγά, επώδυνα, στήριξε τον εαυτό του στον ένα του αγκώνα, να δει, για πρώτη φορά του, τον έξω κόσμο.

Πάσχισε να γείρει να δει έξω από το παράθυρο, δίπλα στο κρεβάτι. Αντίκρισε ένα λευκό τοίχο. Ο άνδρας ρώτησε τη νοσοκόμα

τι θα μπορούσε να ανάγκασε το συχωρεμένο συγκάτοικό του, ο οποίος περιέγραφε τόσο έξοχα πράγματα έξω από το παράθυρο.

Η νοσοκόμα αποκρίθηκε πως ο άνδρας ήταν τυφλός και δεν μπορούσε να δει ούτε τον τοίχο. Πρόσθεσε, «ίσως ήθελε, απλώς, να σου δώσει θάρρος».

 

Επίλογος:Υπάρχει πελώρια ευτυχία στο να κάνεις τους άλλους ευτυχισμένους, παρά τις δική μας κατάσταση. Μοιρασμένη λύπη είναι μισή λύπη, αλλά η ευτυχία, όταν μοιράζεται, διπλασιάζεται»

Endangered Species: In More Danger

 

 

Environmentalism is synonymous with loss. We fret about the loss of the rainforest, the loss of the Arctic ice cap and, eventually, the loss of a livable planet to climate change. But while that decline is undeniable, it can sometimes obscure several decades of real environmental achievement, including the rehabilitation of scores of animals rescued from the brink of extinction. Thanks to the Endangered Species Act (ESA) — the 1973 law that requires the federal government to protect endangered species and plan for their recovery — iconic animals like the bald eagle, the peregrine falcon and the gray whale have rebounded to healthier numbers. It is one of the real success stories of the green movement.

 

If the Bush Administration has its way, however, those protections may soon be endangered themselves. The White House on Aug. 11 proposed a sweeping regulatory overhaul of the ESA, virtually eliminating the independent scientific evaluation of the environmental impact of federal actions. The current law mandates any project that may impact an endangered species and requires approval by a federal agency — for example, a new highway planned by the Department of Transportation that could damage the habitat of a listed red wolf — to undergo an independent review by scientists at the Fish and Wildlife Service or the National Marine Fisheries Service. The proposed new rules would allow the agency in charge of the project — in this example, the Department of Transportation — to decide whether a review would be necessary.

 

Green groups point out that there is little reason to think that federal agencies whose brief doesn't include the environment would go through the bureaucratic trouble of requesting such reviews for their projects. The result would be a drastic cut-back of the independent, scientific assessments — thousands of which are done each year — that are the backbone of the ESA. "It gives those agencies carte blanche to do what they want," says Karla Raettig, the legislative representative for wildlife conservation at the National Wildlife Federation.

Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne framed the new rules as a "narrow regulatory change" that would help streamline the consultation process under the ESA. Kempthorne's take was echoed by industry groups in construction and development that have long complained that the ESA needlessly slows down approval for new projects. "The proposed regulations do address some of our concerns," says Joe Nelson, a lawyer with the National Endangered Species Act Reform Coalition. "It would be a benefit to us."

The Bush Administration's new rules — which could go into effect in as little as 90 days, unless Congress acts to block them — also address a loose end left by the Interior Department's decision in May to list the polar bear as threatened. The reason for listing the bears was climate change — warming is melting their sea ice habitat — but the proposed changes to the ESA will explicitly exempt any action on global warming based on the law. In other words, even though scientific opinion says that global warming will have a disastrous effect on wildlife, the government can't use the ESA to do anything about reducing carbon emissions. "It's not possible to draw a link between greenhouse gas emissions and distant observations of impacts on species," said Kempthorne.

 

Actually, that's not true — the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change last year estimated that if the average global temperature rose 3 to 5 degrees F, up to 30% of the plants and animals on Earth could be at risk of extinction. There is a direct link between rising carbon emissions from human sources, rising temperatures and endangered species. The Bush Administration argues that the ESA was never meant to address global warming, which is true, but the Administration's solution is simply to do nothing — its standard response to so many other areas of environmental policy. "It's ridiculous to admit that something is endangered because of climate change, and then say the law doesn't apply to climate change," says Noah Greenwald, science director at the Center for Biological Diversity.

 

Indeed, it's difficult to avoid the conclusion that the White House is simply trying to dismantle as much of the nation's framework for environmental protection as possible in its last months in office. The Bush Administration had tried in the past to push similar changes to the EPA through Congress, but was defeated. The new regulations, which do not require the approval of Congress, seem to represent a last-minute end run around that opposition. "The Bush Administration is trying to do by regulation what they can't do by legislation," says Raettig.

 

If the rules do go into effect, a new Administration might overturn them, but that could take months or even years, as would attempts to challenge the new rules in court. The changes to the ESA come after a series of breathtakingly obstructionist moves by the Bush Administration — from denying California a routine waiver to institute stronger automobile emissions rules to the Environmental Protection Agency's refusal to regulate greenhouse gases. What seems certain, says Bob Irvin of the Defenders of Wildlife, is that "history will judge this Administration as the most anti-environmental Administration in the history of the U.S."

Πολύ χονδρικά, η κυβέρνηση του G.W. Bush σκοπεύει να καταργήσει την υποχρέωση των διαφόρων υπηρεσιών να υποβάλλουν κάθε προτεινόμενο έργο πρώτα προς μελέτη και έγκριση από επιστήμονες ώστε να εξασφαλιστεί ότι δεν έχει αρνητικές επιπτώσεις στο περιβάλλον. Η κυβέρνηση αυτή μπορεί να πνέει τα λοίσθια, αλλά προσπαθεί να αφήσει ακόμα και τώρα στο τέλος μια παρακαταθήκη εκμετάλλευσης του φυσικού περιβάλλοντος χωρίς προηγούμενο στην ιστορία των ΗΠΑ.

Έκανε το γύρο του κόσμου και σκοτώθηκε στη Βαρυμπόμπη

Σχεδόν είκοσι μέρες μετά τον τραγικό θάνατο 70χρονου Βρετανού ποδηλάτη στην εθνική οδό Αθηνών - Λαμίας, στο ύψος της Βαρυμπόμπης, από τροχαίο που προκάλεσε ασυνείδητος οδηγός, η βρετανική εφημερίδα Daily Mail αποκαλύπτει ότι επρόκειτο για ένα σύγχρονο «Μάρκο Πόλο».

Ο Ίαν Χίμπελ, όπως ήταν το όνομά του, 40 ολόκληρα χρόνια γύριζε όλο τον κόσμο, με μοναδικό του «σύντροφο» το ποδήλατό του. Στη διάρκεια της ατελείωτης περιπλάνησής του στον κόσμο από την Ανταρκτική μέχρι τον Αμαζόνιο και από την Αλάσκα έως την Ινδονησία, πυροβολήθηκε από ληστές, κινδύνεψε να τον φάνε ζωντανό τροπικά μυρμήγκια, έπεσε σε βάλτους, κυνηγήθηκε από ελέφαντες και μία φορά του επιτέθηκε ένα πεινασμένο λιοντάρι.

 

Ωστόσο, κατάφερε να παραμείνει ζωντανός. Μέχρι που ήρθε στην Ελλάδα και έπεσε θύμα ενός ασυνείδητου οδηγού, που, σύμφωνα με αυτόπτες μάρτυρες, έκανε κόντρες με ένα άλλο αυτοκίνητο. Ο 70χρονος διέσχιζε με το ποδήλατό του την εθνική οδό Αθηνών - Λαμίας, όταν ένα αυτοκίνητο τον χτύπησε θανάσιμα και τον παράτησε. Ο κοσμογυρισμένος άντρας, άφησε την τελευταία του πνοή λίγη ώρα μετά την μεταφορά του στο νοσοκομείο, ενώ ο 32χρονος δράστης συνελήφθη την επόμενη μέρα στην Κηφισιά.

Είναι του Ομίλου Media Markt αλλά τουλάχιστον στο εξωτερικό έχει τη φήμη ότι άνοιξε για να βγάζουν τα προιόντα με φθηνότερες τιμές!!!

Τουλάχιστον 600 άνθρωποι, εθελοντές φωτογραφήθηκαν γυμνοί από τον αμερικανό φωτογράφο Σπένσερ Τιούνικ, στον Ελβετικό παγετώνα του Aletsch που συρρικνώνεται συνεχώς.

 

 

Ο Τιούνικ συγκέντρωσε τους περίπου 600 εθελοντές από διάφορες πλευρές του πλανήτη στις Αλπεις και παρά το κρύο εκείνοι φωτογραφήθηκαν γυμνοί στον παγετώνα Aletsch, προκειμένου να αυξήσουν την ευαισθητοποίηση για την υπερθέρμανση του πλανήτη.

 

Η φωτογράφηση στον παγετώνα Aletsch ήταν πρωτοβουλία της περιβαλλοντικής οργάνωσης Greenpeace, ως τμήμα της εκστρατείας για την ευαισθητοποίηση του κοινού για το φαινόμενο του θερμοκηπίου.

 

Παρά το υψόμετρο των 2.300 μέτρων στο αλπικό τοπίο, η θερμοκρασία κυμάνθηκε από 10 έως και 15 βαθμούς Κελσίου.

 

Οι παγετώνες είναι ευαίσθητοι στις κλιματικές αλλαγές και η συρρίκνωσή τους έχουν ξεκινήσει από την αρχή της βιομηχανικής επανάστασης, αλλά ο ρυθμός συρρίκνωσή τους έχει επιταχυνθεί τα τελευταία χρόνια.

 

Οι αλπικοί παγετώνες έχουν χάσει το 1/3 του μήκους τους και περίπου το μισό του όγκου τους τα τελευταία 150 χρόνια. Ο παγετώνας Aletsch, που προστατεύεται από την Ουνέσκο ως μνημείο της φύσης, έχει χάσει περί τα 115 μέτρα τα τελευταία δύο χρόνια.

 

Η Ελβετία έχει 1.800 παγετώνες περίπου, με τους περισσότερους να υποχωρούν.

 

Σύμφωνα με την Greenpeace, οι περισσότεροι παγετώνες θα έχουν λιώσει ως το 2080.

Αυτόπτης μάρτυρας ανέφερε οτι τις αγόραζαν τεσσερις τεσσερις.... (τις τηλεοράσεις). Μηπως για να τις πουλήσουν? Αφου για μια συγκεκριμένη 40άρα Sony, την 1η μέρα λειτουργίας η τιμή ηταν κάτω απο το μισό της συνηθισμένης... (499 αντι 1000 ευρώ)

A Night With the Morality Police

A policewoman warns a woman about the state of her clothing and hair during a crackdown on adhering to the strict Islamic dress code in Tehran.

 

Spooning up some pomegranate seeds by the side of the road while waiting for my German friend Nadia, I noticed the morality police approaching. But dressed in my baggiest clothes and a pair of nerdy glasses, I didn't imagine I could possibly be mistaken for a moral transgressor. I was wrong. The two ladies in long black chadors informed me that my coat was too short, and ordered me into their van. I protested that I was waiting for a foreign friend whom I couldn't just desert. They considered the argument, then decided to wait and take both of us. When Nadia arrived, they loved her. "Look at her, she's a foreigner and her coat is longer than yours," one officer said. The other added that I needed to learn better hijab (Islamic covering) from my German friend!

 

Everyone familiar with the situation in Iran had tried to change my mind when I decided to spend a few months there this fall. "It's become bad, people prefer to stay home rather than go out because they keep bothering everyone," the argument usually went. I had dismissed this as exaggeration. Even in the back of the van, Nadia and I were quite comfortably eating our pomegranate and at times laughing about the absurdity of the situation. I joked with the morality police ladies that I was the worst catch they had ever made. "You really couldn't find someone a little more provocatively dressed? Am I just filling your nightly catch quota?" But the third captive in the van, a 19-year old girl who'd been caught with her boyfriend, was crying hysterically, begging to be released. I suspect she may have feared the wrath of her own parents more than the sanction of the morality police.

 

Driving us off to one of their stations, the police ladies told me to call a family member to bring a longer coat. There was no way I could call my mother, who was on a much shorter visit to Iran, and who would have panicked. So I called my old uncle. "Ehem, I was arrested by the morality police, can you please bring me a longer coat? I'm really sorry about this. Oh, and don't mention it to my mom please!" Life in Iran can make you feel like a teenager in an eternal boarding school.

 

At the station, I was required, along with five other women, to sign a statement promising to do a better job of covering myself. Meanwhile, I found myself staring wide-eyed at the treatment of the highly made-up woman in super-high heels: The male officer who was about to set me on the right path was clearly flirting with her.

 

One of my fellow detainees had told me that once a longer coat arrived for me, my own one would be shredded. I asked the female guard whether that was true, and she nodded. She just ignored me when I told her that was truly psychotic. But when I saw the pile of coats left behind, intact, in a plastic bag, I realized the shredded-coat tale was an urban legend, or a relic of a more ideological past. In fact, not once did I feel real fear or threat during the experience — a stark contrast to what the generation before me had endured. Many of my friends and family members have horrifying stories of violent encounters with the morality police, called the "committee" in common parlance, including being punished with lashes and fines. Still, there are fears that things could get worse again: Tehran prosecutor Said Mortazavi announced on Friday that there would be an increase in morality patrols after Ramadan.

 

The morality committees, which are a subdivision of the police, had eased up on their strict enforcement of dress codes and other social restrictions in the last years of the reformist presidency of Mohammad Khatami, but things changed last summer, when the police announced that the morality committees would resume street patrols to ensure "social security".

 

The resultant crackdown saw beatings and humiliation of young people so extreme that President Ahmadinejad's conservative government even criticized some of the treatment. If my experience is anything to go by, they seem once again to have been restrained.

 

The duty officer who interviewed me said the country had laws and that I had to adhere to them. I told him I was doing so by wearing a coat and a scarf, and that as far as I was concerned, my morality was more intact than the morality of some who wore chadors.

 

He said it wasn't enough for my heart to be pure — I had to wear the right dress. Although I was arrested for wearing a coat whose length was deemed morally inappropriate, Iran has no law that stipulates the correct length of coats. And the law that requires the wearing of hijab is open to a multitude of interpretations.

 

Still, my cousin who had accompanied my uncle knew the "right" interpretation and had brought me a coat that reached my knees. That pleased the officer, and having learned that I didn't usually live in Iran, he made a friendly remark about Iran being mine as much as it is his. Once out, my family and I simply giggled together and I knew that as far as arrests go, I had experienced a good one. Not so long ago, the experience could have been far more traumatic.

 

The officers who dealt with me seemed, more than anything, to be simply doing a job they were being paid for. Still, I too now prefer to stay home as much as possible, not convinced that, right now, Iran is mine as much as anyone else's.
