Δεν λέω, μεγάλη απώλεια ο Vincent από το βουνό. Έχει μείνει όμως, ευτυχώς, ο Μαγκλάρας, που είναι εξίσου έμπειρος και μάχημος. Σε διαφορετική περίπτωση.....θα ανέβαινα πάνω με pampers..... agavalas 1,000 Report post Posted December 18, 2013 Lech tourist officials said the avalanche warning scale was at its lowest A British teenager has been killed and his father seriously injured in an avalanche in Austria. The 16-year-old boy - who was skiing with his father, twin brother and a guide - was buried under an avalanche at the exclusive resort of Lech am Arlberg on Tuesday. His brother escaped but his 51-year-old father was buried alongside him and remains in hospital. The father and son, from Winchester in Hampshire, successfully activated their emergency anti-avalanche airbags - designed to stop people being buried - but it failed to save the 16-year-old's life. Austrian police said the guide who is said to be very experienced, will face a criminal investigation. "The father and his boy were buried," said a police spokesman. "The ski guide was able to get away from the avalanche and immediately after he called rescue teams. "He then started trying to free the two who were buried. The rescue team finally rescued the father and got the boy out some time later." The spokesman added: "The instructor will face a criminal investigation. It will be investigated if he could have or should have avoided the accident. "He was a guide, so there should have been no problem. The whole group was properly equipped with avalanche equipment." An avalanche warning of one, on a scale of one to four, was in place on the day of the accident. Pia Herbst, from the Lech am Arlberg Tourism Board, defended the 39-year-old ski guide. She said: "He is a very good guide and he has a lot of experience. He has the highest level of education you can have in skiing and he didn't do anything wrong. "It was a normal day to go for a tour, and unfortunately it was an accident with avalanche risk 'one', which is not high at all. Still something can happen. It was a very, very sad accident." The Foreign Office confirmed the death and is providing consular assistance to the family. :: Watch Sky News live on television, on Sky channel 501, Virgin Media channel 602, Freeview channel 82 and Freesat channel 202. πηγή :http://news.sky.com/story/1184277/british-boy-dies-in-ski-holiday-avalanche Αξιοσημείωτο είναι ότι φορούσε ABS που ενεργοποίησε .. αλλά πάραυτα δυστυχώς δεν τον βοήθησε ... Olga 6,796 Report post Posted February 20, 2014 Are you prepared? I’d been ski touring for about 5 years, before I saw the snow unfold in front of me for the first time. It was exactly like what you see in the ski movies; blocks of snow detaching from the slope, heading downhill at a roaring speed, disturbing peace in the valley and then the unforgettable series of cliff-outs and waterfall crossings we had to do just to get out of this place! All we wanted to do is get out of this area, it just wasn’t fun anymore; too many unexpected obstacles and either way, we were tired. In my early days, before my first epic day happened, my ski touring learning path had been progressive, with no major accident or avalanches. I started out my education with an Avalanche Safety Training 1 course with Yamnuska in Canmore, where we went to the easy slopes of the Bow summit area. I slowly began exploring the backcountry of resorts like Sunshine Village and Kicking Horse Resort. Friends would show me the path and knowledge to travel safely in the backcountry; my confidence grew as I began to have a better understanding of how the snow worked and as I gained more backcountry experience. Over the years I ended up living in Golden and Revelstoke where I spent most of my days of skiing Glacier National Park, chasing powder. At this point, I became a leader, showing the area to foreign ski bums who wanted to see Canada’s backcountry; my confidence continued to grow with each day in the field. Rogers pass was seeing more and more visitors every year, I remember hearing stories from old locals explaining that they usually had to break trail on most of the up track, whereas these days, there were highways of ski tracks going up in every direction. We can probably blame this on the areas good access and the regular snow precipitation, offering world-class skiing. This is why I liked going there. I knew Rogers Pass like the back of my hand, my confidence kept growing over the years, and it was my destination of choice for ski touring. After a year in Revelstoke, I left, to do 2 years of school in the Adventure Guide Program at TRU to push my progression and to follow my dream to become a guide. Living in Kamloops was a drag. Being away from the powder lines and spending days in a classroom made me anxious; I just wanted the weekends to come so I could travel 4 hours in either direction to get a few turns before class started again. On the morning of January 26, 2013, the sky was broken and temperatures were -4; the bulletin was showing alpine considerable, tree line moderate, below tree line was moderate as well. Tim and I packed up and headed to Revelstoke with the truck to pick up J-F for an awesome day. J-F throws his stuff in the back and off we go for our adventure. On the drive to the pass we discuss the conditions and the weather, a usual ritual, then back to sipping our coffee catching up on the good times listening to some tunes. We arrived at the discovery center and notice the parking lot is packed with people and herds of skiers getting ready. We walk to the center and talk with the warden, checking the latest conditions. We debate on where to go and we decide to head towards Fortitude, it was far away from the crowds and we can probably get some fresh tracks. The warden tells us to use the approach from the Bostock parking lot and explains the area briefly. We park at the trail head, cross the highway and cross the train tracks from underneath the bridge. The skin up took us forever, it was way longer than we expected. Eventually we reached the ridge where we kept walking for until we reached a main slope that seemed to reach the bottom of the valley, where we could easily head out back to the car. Sky was scattered and the winds were calm as we removed our skins. Standing on top of the slope, we decide that Tim will ski cut the slope and check for any instability. Tim makes it down to the trees and waits for the second skier to ski a line on the left of him. Once he makes it to the trees he signals me that he is in a safe spot and waits for me to ski the slope; I traverse to the left on the ridge across a little island of 8 trees, to avoid skiing on top of my friend, and drop in. Suddenly I come over a roll and the slope cracked underneath my skis. It all seemed very natural, just like all the training I had done had prepared me for this day. I yell out avalanche, and ski to the side, where I reached an island of trees. Then I wait and watch the avalanche, about a size 2, drain out into a steep couloir on the left. The other half rushes right by my friend, who is hugging a tree for dear life, he was on a snowboard which made it difficult for him to escape to the right, but he luckily chose a safe spot to stop. Once the roaring stopped, everything got quiet. I proceed to ski down on the hard bed surface to reach my friends. The adrenaline is rushing through our veins and we take a minute to relax and discuss what just happened. Most importantly, we had to get out of there before dark sets. Our first surprise was the massive cliff at the end of our run, which made us detour to the right; then our second surprise was some sort of snow-covered waterfall. We could hear the water running underneath the snow and ice, but with a few tricky moves we made it down the creek, which leads to the car, but night has already fallen. Headlamps are on as we skin back to the car exhausted. On the drive back we discuss our epic day, from the long approach, to triggering a wind slab, to our epic descent out in the dark. We wonder what we did badly and what we did well. We end up coming to a conclusion; that no matter how prepared you are it’s only a matter of time until it happens to you. Get educated. and always be ready for a bad day.
