French Alps avalanche: Climbers killed near Chamonix

 

 

Christian Trommsdorff spoke to the BBC from near the scene of the accident

 

Nine climbers have been killed in an avalanche near the French Alpine ski resort of Chamonix and four others are missing, officials say.

Those killed were reported to be from Spain, Germany, Switzerland and the UK. Nine other climbers were injured.

Local authorities deployed rescue teams in helicopters and said it was the deadliest avalanche in recent memory.

The alarm was sounded at 05:25 local time (03:25 GMT) by one of the injured on the slopes of Mont Maudit.

The route is popular with summer tourists heading for the summit of Mont Blanc.

'Cursed mountain'

In all, 28 climbers were roped together in several groups on Thursday morning.

They are believed to have reached 4,000m (13,120 ft) when the avalanche struck.

A spokeswoman at the Haute-Savoie prefecture told the BBC that six bodies had been found.

Hours later, rescuers found the bodies of three more victims, believed to be Britons.

Four more climbers - said to be two UK nationals and two Spaniards - are still missing.

Chamonix mayor Jean-Louis Verdier told Reuters news agency the avalanche was completely unexpected.

"We had no more reason than usual to be alarmed," he said.

"It's a steep mountain face. There are big plates of snow where an avalanche can easily occur. But this morning we had no reason to expect an avalanche of this size and such a tragedy."

Rescue teams have been using helicopters and heat-seeking devices to try to locate the missing. Early on Thursday evening, the search was called off until the next day.

The French authorities described the avalanche as "the most deadly" in recent years.

The weather in the region has been warm and windy over the last few days, which could have led to an increased risk of avalanche at high altitudes, the BBC's Imogen Foulkes in Berne reports.

Chamonix-based mountain guide Richard Mansfield described the area as "very beautiful", but said that it was avalanche-prone.

Rescue teams deployed helicopters to the scene

He said the slopes on Mont Maudit faced away from the prevailing wind, which meant snow could be pushed over forming slabs.

"These can easily be set off by a passing climber, causing an avalanche," he said.

Visiting the area, Interior Minister Manuel Valls described the incident as "catastrophic" and said a full investigation was under way.

Mont Maudit - meaning the cursed mountain - is the third-highest peak in the Mont Blanc massif range, rising to 4,465m.

Eight climbers were killed in an avalanche near Mont Maudit in 2008.

Αίσιο τέλος είχε το θρίλερ με τους τέσσερις ορειβάτες που αγνοούνταν στο Λευκό Όρος μετά την πτώση χιονοστιβάδας από την οποία έχασαν...

τη ζωή τους εννέα άτομα.

 

 

 

Οι ορειβάτες, είναι ζωντανοί και καλά στην υγεία τους, όπως έγινε γνωστό από τις αστυνομικές αρχές.

Οι δύο από τους ορειβάτες επέλεξαν να ακολουθήσουν μια άλλη διαδρομή και έτσι δεν τους παρέσυρε η χιονοστιβάδα ενώ οι δύο άλλοι δεν βρίσκονταν καν στο βουνό, αφού είχαν ακυρώσει την εκδρομή τους.

Five helicopters spent the day ferrying injured climbers from the wreckage of Camp 3 (20,500ft.) on the northeast face of Manaslu (8156m). At least nineteen injured climbers have been ferried off the mountain in the wake of a massive avalanche.

At 4:30 a.m. (local time) on Sunday, September 23, a serac fall at 7000m triggered an avalanche that buried all twenty-five tents in Camp 3 (6248m) and a dozen in Camp 2.

At this time search and rescue efforts have been suspended with French Press quoting Nepal's Minister of Tourism announcing, "The chances of finding survivors are now non-existent." Current reports have eight or nine climbers dead on the mountain, two missing and another, possibly German, climber dead after undergoing surgery in Kathmandu.

Disaster Strikes on Manaslu

 

In all mountain travel there is an assumed risk, one that we take since we are searching for adventure. The perception of this risk usually changes with the objective, quite often becoming clouded as the objectives get personally more important.

I am not really even sure where to start. I will begin part way through our expedition,,

We were getting acclimatized and moving quickly up to around 7000m on Mt-Manaslu. As our group toured higher they encountered loud whummfing sounds . Which is a settling of the snowpack that indicates a weak bottom layer. At this point it was simply an indication of weakness that would get worse with a heavier load…. We turned around and skied down, experiencing amazing skiing at the highest elevation I have ever skied.

 

For 10 days we weathered rain and snow, day after day of it. So the upper mountain was getting loaded with the weight of new snow. When it finally cleared it was obvious that most of the mountain had gone through many avalanche cycles. There were crown lines, and avalanche debris everywhere. Though the slopes that we needed to climb had not slid. We waited a few more days for the snow to stabilize some more before venturing onto them.

 

A bit of a backstory is needed… Tibet’s borders are closed to expeditions this year and most expeditions have re located to Mt-Manaslu., that’s why we ended up here. Our plans for Cho-Oyu were canceled and our ski objective became the eighth highest mountain in the world. We arrived on Sept 6^th and watched basecamp grow into over 300 climbers and 200 sherpa. More climbers than this place has ever seen in a season. It seemed ripe for a catastrophe of sorts.

On our way up on Sept 22^nd, we could see a line up of climbers on the fixed ropes, a traffic jam moving slowly through the seracs. Easily over a hundred people on their way up to Camp 2. We were coming late so we could avoid this and get up to our Camp 2.

 

When I first saw the traditional Camp 2 placement I knew that there was no way I would camp there. Sitting under the imposing face of Manaslu, I would never be able to sleep knowing how much avalanche terrain was above me. It was a campsite that has proven to be safe over the years, but given the right conditions it could get hit by a large avalanche. We searched and finally placed our Camp 2 off to the side. Perched on an ice shelf, it was as “safe” as we could find, a small elevated bit of terrain away from the main flow from the face.

 

On Sept 22^nd, we arrived at our camp 2, I looked up and saw many tents camped at 6800m directly in the center of the slope, Camp 3. I worried about this but could not do anything about it

 

We went to bed thinking we may try for the summit the next day, depending on how the snow had stabilized. Which is information we would get ascending the slope the next day. The stability could go either way, the new snow could have compressed the weak layer and bridged any weakness, allowing for safe travel. Or the new snow, combined with the wind could have created a slab of snow sitting precariously on this weak basal layer…..

 

It turned out to be exactly that. At 4:45 am the cold temperatures created some brittle seracs, which broke off from the glacier at 7400m and landed on the wind slabbed snow, giving it enough of a trigger to crack approximately 300m across the slope. This avalanche swept through Camp 3 catching everyone sleeping in their tents and wrapped in their bags. At least 16 tents were swept off their platforms and sent careening down the mountainside.

 

The blast of wind from the avalanche sent our tents flapping and soon enough we could hear people yelling for each other. Lights from headlamps accompanied many voices and we knew that disaster had struck.

Skinning up, our headlamps lit up a down boot, and we knew that the tents had been hit. Tents, clothes, sleeping bags, lone boots, everything lay partially buried everywhere. Within minutes we were helping people get warm and digging others out of the snow. It was hard to tell how many people where involved so we focused on those that where above the snow. Knowing that those who were buried had very little chance of surviving.

The variety of injuries was astounding, some people were “OK” from their 1000 foot tumble, others were so full of internal injuries that life escaped them quickly. Some had arrived sitting on top of the debris while the tent beside them was completely buried in hard suffocating avalanche debris. There were injured people stuck in their tents with the dead body of their tent mate wrapped around them. The line between life and death was inches. Some people were talking to their tent mates as it happened, and when the avalanche stopped their partners were nowhere to be seen.

 

Immediately our group started helping out, digging out those that we could. Providing oxygen, warm clothing and any care we could. Stabilizing and helping out everywhere. The cold temperatures and high elevation made it essential that we get people warm. There were people partially buried with broken ribs and dislocated arms that we dug out and helped get warm. Others that were so injured we provided the as much care as we could but still watched them fade away. Through some miracle there were lots that simply needed sleeping bags and warmth. We spent 5 hours helping people, mourning with people as they watched their friends pass away beside them, digging a helicopter platform and moving the injured people close enough to fly them away once the helicopters got there. While also digging out the deceased and trying to locate any other missing people.

 

 

At one point I sat and openly cried for those that had died.

 

 

 

 

The line was so thin today, many survived by pure luck,while their friends passed away. With adventure comes risk. But I wonder how many people who died yesterday fully understood the personal risk they were taking. Obsessed with the possibility of climbing one of the world’s highest mountains, our vision becomes clouded and we perceive the risk we want instead of the reality of what is around us.

 

My heart goes out to all those that passed away today.

The 10 Deadliest Avalanche Events in History

 

 

 

Yungay, Peru, 31 May 1970 (20,000 casualties) - On 31 May 1970, an earthquake off the coast of Peru caused a substantial section of the north slope of Mt. Huascaran to collapse. [situated in the Cordillera Blanca, the world's highest tropical mountain range, Mount Huascarán rises to 6768 m above sea-level.] The avalanche moved down hill at a speed of 100 MPH with a mass of roughly 80 million cubic feet of ice, mud and rock. It ran nearly 11 miles, burying the towns of Yungay and Ranrahirca in up to 300 feet of rock and debris. Estimates suggest that the earthquake killed over 20,000 people.

Tyrolean Alps, 13 December 1916 (10,000 casualties) - Over a 24-hour period during World War 1 Italian and Austrian forces died in a series of avalanches caused by a mixture of heavy snowfall and man-made explosives. An entire barracks was destroyed, burying 250 officers. Up to 1918, mountainsides were bombed, resulting in an additional 40,000 deaths.

Ranrahirca, Peru, 10 January 1962 (3,500 casualties) - Tons of melting snow from a storm a day earlier flowed down Nevado de Huascarán and fall into a canyon 3,000 feet below, obliterating two villages and killing almost a thousand people. Strong winds carry the melted mass along the narrow walls of the canyon to other communities which are instantly wiped out, too. Finally, a catastrophic 39 million feet of snow and debris exited out of the canyon and burst into the the town of Ranrahirca, burying everything in sight.

Plurs, Switzerland, 4 September 1618 (2,427 casualties) - On September 4, 1618 the entire town of Plurs, Switzerland was wiped off the face of the earth when a massive avalanche, known as the Rodi avalanche, buried the town. Only four people, who were away from the village at the time, survived.

Swiss-Austrian-Italian Alps, 1950-1951 (over 265 casualties) - In an unusual winter season known as the Winter of Terror, heavy snowstorms dump huge masses of snow and ice, creating a series of over 600 avalanches that occurred throughout the different national boundaries encompassed by the Alps. In Austria, more than 100 lives were lost, while Switzerland lost 92 lives.

Blons, Austria, 12 January 1954 (over 200 casualties) - In what is regarded as Austria’s worst avalanche, the village center of Blons was destroyed by a mid-morning dry-snow avalanche called the Falv. Nine hours later, a second avalanche known as the Montclav moves 3,800 feet downhill in less than a minute, wiping out the village and burying 115 people, which included a team of rescuers.

Lahaul Valley, India, early March 1979 (200 casualties) - A series of snowstorms over a five-day period results in avalanches that cascade down the foothills of the Himalayas in Himachal Pradesh state, dumping up to 20 feet of snow on the inhabited valley.

North Ossetia, Russia, 21 September 2002 (150 casualties) - A collapsed glacial chunk on Mount Kazbek turned into a 20-million-ton avalanche that rampaged down Karmadon Gorge, burying several villages. Among the casualties was Russian actor/director Sergei Bodrov Jr., and his production crew, who were on location for a film shoot.

Siachen Glacier region, 7 April 2012 (140 casualties) - On 7 April 2012, an avalanche hit a Pakistani military base near the disputed Siachen Glacier region, trapping 140 soldiers and civilian contractors under deep snow. It is the worst avalanche that the Pakistani military has experienced in the area. On 29 May 2012, Pakistan declared that the 129 soldiers and 11 civilians were dead.

Wellington, Washington, March 1, 1910 (96 casualties) - For nine days at the end of February 1910, the little town of Wellington, Washington was assailed by a terrible blizzard. As much as a foot of snow fell every hour, and, on the worst day, 11 feet (340 cm) of snow fell. Just after 1 a.m. on March 1, as a result of a lightning strike, a slab of snow broke loose from the side of Windy Mountain during a violent thunderstorm. A ten-foot high mass of snow, half a mile long and a quarter of a mile wide, fell toward the town. Ninety-six people were killed, including 35 passengers, 58 Great Northern employees on the trains, and three railroad employees in the depot. Wellington was quietly renamed Tye during October 1910 because of the unpleasant associations of the old name.

Και στο σωστό θέμα είναι και πάρα πολύ χρήσιμο. Απλά να επισημάνουμε ότι η κατοχή ενός Baryvox πρέπει απαραιτήτως να συνοδευτεί και από πρακτική εξάσκηση στην χρήση του (κυρίως στην διάσωση, να το φοράμε όλοι ξέρουμε).

 

Πέρσι προσγειωθήκαμε απότομα στην πικρή πραγματικότητα, όταν στην εκπαίδευση μας συνειδητοποιήσαμε πόσο δύσκολο είναι να βρεθεί το θύμα. Το άγχος, οι δύσκολες συνθήκες και η κούραση που έρχεται μετά από κάποια λεπτά φτυαρίσματος κάνουν την εμπειρία πολύ διαφορετική από ότι μπορούμε να φανταστούμε από τον καναπέ μας.

 

Όσοι έχετε, ή σκέφτεστε να αποκτήσετε πομποδέκτη χιονοστιβάδων, κάντε οπωσδήποτε πρακτική εξάσκηση, είτε σε κάποια σχολή (Όπως του Κοτρωνάρου, που κάναμε πέρσι), είτε μαζί με μια ομάδα που ξέρει τι της γίνεται (τo Αγρίνιο team στα νότια και οι powder hunters στα βόρια είναι οι πρώτοι που μου έρχονται στο μυαλό). Το βρίσκω εξωφρενικά εγωιστικό να φοράς baryvox για να σε σώσουν αν γίνει η στραβή, αλλά να μην ενδιαφέρεσαι να μάθεις πως να σώσεις εσύ τους άλλους που είναι θαμμένοι και η ζωή τους μπορεί να εξαρτάται από τις δικές σου κινήσεις.

Kashmir avalanches: Several dead in Neelum Valley

 

 

At least 11 people have been killed and 10 others are missing, many of them soldiers, after they were hit by avalanches in the disputed Kashmir region on Friday, officials say.

 

The avalanches struck in the mountainous Neelum Valley, in Pakistan-administered Kashmir.

 

The soldiers were searching for colleagues hit by the first avalanche when they were struck by a second fall.

Officials said the search was hampered by bad weather and harsh terrain.

 

The party of rescuers had discovered two bodies when the second avalanche struck in Dana Tajian, 80 miles (130km) from Pakistan-administered Kashmir's main town of Muzaffarabad, killing at least nine more.

 

The avalanches struck close to the Pakistani side of the Line of Control, the disputed de facto border that divides Kashmir between India and Pakistan.

 

India and Pakistan have fought two wars over the Himalayan area, which both claim in its entirety.

The two sides have thousands of troops stationed in the region, where a ceasefire has been in place since 2003.

Officials said that heavy snow may have triggered the avalanches, which are common in the area.

 

In April, 140 Pakistani soldiers were buried when a huge wall of snow crashed into the remote Siachen Glacier base high in the mountains. All have since been declared dead, although some of the bodies still remain buried in the snow.

In February, at least 16 Indian soldiers on duty in the mountains of Kashmir were killed when two avalanches swept through their army camps.

Η άτυχη Ruth είχε πάει με τον σκύλο της στο βουνό όπως συνήθιζε, όμως αυτή τη φορά δεν επέστρεψαν και οι δυο. Ο σκύλος κατάφερε να ξεφύγει από τη χιονοστιβάδα στην οποία η ίδια παγιδεύτηκε και άφησε την τελευταία της πνοή.

ΑΒS Avalanche Airbag: Εξελιγμένος αερόσακος χιονοστιβάδων

 

 

Σύμφωνα με τους ειδικούς των χιονοστιβάδων, όταν ένα άτομο παγιδευτεί στο χιόνι, η πρώτη προτεραιότητα είναι η αποφυγή του να θαφτεί μέσα στο χιόνι. Ο λόγος είναι, ότι αν το άτομο θαφτεί ολόκληρο μετά από ακριβώς 15 λεπτά, η πιθανότητα να επιβιώσει πέφτει σημαντικά. Για να βοηθήσει κάποιος ένα άτομο σε μια τέτοια κατάσταση, θα το καταφέρει μόνο αν δεν είναι θαμμένος ο ίδιος. Εδώ είναι που ο αερόσακος χιονοστιβάδων ABS μπαίνει στο παιχνίδι: με ένα μόνο απλό γρήγορο τράβηγμα της χειρολαβής ενεργοποίησης φουσκώσουν στιγμιαία δύο αερόσακοι με συνολικό όγκο 170 λίτρα. Αυτός ο επιπλέον όγκος είναι σχεδόν σίγουρο ότι θα εμποδίσει το άτομο που το φοράει να θαφτεί στο χιόνι. Ο λόγος βασίζεται σε έναν απλό νόμο της φυσικής: Όταν ένα μεγάλο σώμα βρίσκεται σε κίνηση, κινείται πάντοτε προς την επιφάνεια, πράγμα το οποίο ισχύει και στις χιονοστιβάδες. Τα 170 λίτρα που προστίθενται στον ανθρώπινο όγκο όταν ενεργοποιηθεί ο αερόσακος προσδίδουν την άνωση που χρειάζεται για να παραμείνει το σώμα στην επιφάνεια και κατά συνέπεια να παραμείνει στη ζωή. Η πιθανότητα επιβίωσης σε χιονοστιβάδα με τη χρήση του αερόσακου ABS είναι 97%.

 

Ο εφευρέτης του αερόσακου ΑΒS

 

Ο αερόσακος ΑΒS οφείλει την ύπαρξή του σε μια συμπτωματική ανακάλυψη. Τη δεκαετία του 1970, ένας δασοφύλακας παγιδεύτηκε σε χιονοστιβάδα χωρίς να θαφτεί το ολόκληρο το σώμα του. Υπέθεσε ότι για το αποτέλεσμα αυτό είναι υπεύθυνο ένα παιχνίδι που έτυχε να μεταφέρει στους ώμους του. Αυτό ήταν που αύξησε τον όγκο του, και έτσι του επέτρεψε να παραμείνει στην επιφάνεια. Μετά από αυτό ο Peter Aschauer αντιλήφθηκε αυτή τη δυνατότητα και ξεκίνησε να εξελίσσει τον αερόσακο ABS και το 1985 το πρώτο σύστημα ABS παρουσιάστηκε στο κοινό. Σήμερα μετά από 25 χρόνια ερευνών και συνεχούς εξέλιξης, η χρησιμότητα του αερόσακου έχει αποδειχθεί στη πράξη, ειδικά σε όσους αντιμετώπισαν κάποια στιγμή τον κίνδυνο μιας χιονοστιβάδας. Σήμερα σε πολλές ορεινές διασώσεις, σε επιτροπές εκτίμησης χιονοστιβάδων, σε εταιρείες και οργανισμούς heliski, σε στρατιωτικούς και σε οδηγούς βουνού σε όλο τον κόσμο, ο αερόσακος χιονοστιβάδων ABS αποτελεί μόνιμο σύντροφο στην καθημερινή τους ζωή.

 

Το διπλό σύστημα αερόσακου ΑΒS

 

 

 

Χάρη στη μακροχρόνια τεχνογνωσία και σε πολλές ευρεσιτεχνίες που κατέχει, το ABS είναι ο ηγέτης στους αερόσακους χιονοστιβάδων. Ήδη από το 1996 το ABS άλλαξε και μετατράπηκε στο σύστημα διπλού αερόσακου. Από τότε το γνήσιο ABS αποτελείται πάντα από δύο μέρη και αποκαλείται “Twin Bags”. Και αυτό συνέβη γιατί οι διπλοί αερόσακοι είναι πολύ περισσότερο ελαστικοί και κινούνται μαζί με τη χιονοστιβάδα, σε αντίθεση με τους μονούς που τοποθετούνται πίσω από το κεφάλι. Χάρη σε αυτό επιτυγχάνεται η άνοδος του σώματος στην επιφάνεια του χιονιού αλλά και η μείωση από τις αναταράξεις κατά την πτώση στη πλαγιά. Οι δύο αερόσακοι φουσκώνουν ταυτόχρονα αλλά έχουν ξεχωριστές βαλβίδες κλεισίματος. Αυτό προσφέρει το πλεονέκτημα αν ο ένας αερόσακος υποστεί βλάβη, ο άλλος να παραμείνει φουσκωμένος για μια επαρκή διάρκεια χρόνου. Επιπλέον πλεονέκτημα αποτελείτο γεγονός ότι ακόμα και φουσκωμένος, ο αερόσακος προσφέρει απόλυτη ελευθερία κινήσεων και καθαρό οπτικό πεδίο. Έτσι, μαζί με πομποδέκτη χιονοστιβάδων, φτυάρι και ανιχνευτή, το ABS συνιστάται από τους ειδικούς σαν τον ιδανικό εξοπλισμό κινδύνου.

 

Ηγέτης στην αγορά λόγω της καινοτομίας

 

Η καρδιά του συστήματος ABS είναι η βασική μονάδα μαζί με το ολοκληρωμένο σύστημα αερόσακου και το καλά μελετημένο σύστημα μεταφοράς, το οποίο έχει σχεδιαστεί έτσι ώστε να μπορεί να αντέχει τις τεράστιες δυνάμεις που ασκούνται κατά τη διάρκεια μιας χιονοστιβάδας. Το σακίδιο μεταφοράς προσφέρεται σε διάφορα μεγέθη μεταξύ 5 Lκαι 40 L με ένα περιμετρικό φερμουάρ που μπορεί να φορεθεί εύκολα. Η απλοϊκότητα στη χρήση, αποτρέπει κάθε περίπτωση λάθους στη χρήση. Επομένως φορώντας τον αερόσακο ABS, είσαι πάντα εξοπλισμένος με ένα αξιόπιστο σύστημα διάσωσης.

 

Το σύστημα ABS μπορεί να επεκταθεί με τη χρήση του προστατευτικού πλάτης, το οποίο προσαρμόζεται στο σώμα πολύ εύκολα με αυτοκόλλητες λωρίδες. Με αυτό τον τρόπο, το σύστημα, όχι μόνο εμποδίζει από το θάψιμο στο χιόνι, αλλά ταυτόχρονα μειώνει τη πιθανότητα τραυματισμού από οποιαδήποτε πτώση. Επίσης, το ABS είναι το μοναδικό σύστημα που παρέχει τη δυνατότητα ασύρματης ενεργοποίησης για ομάδες ατόμων, μέσω ραδιοφωνικής συχνότητας. Κάθε μέλος της ομάδας μπορεί να ενεργοποιήσει τους αερόσακους των υπολοίπων μελών της ομάδας σε περίπτωση κινδύνου, πράγμα που μπορεί να σημαίνει σημαντική αύξηση των επιπέδων ασφάλειας της ομάδας.

 

 

ΟΙ 10 ΒΑΣΙΚΕΣ ΑΡΧΕΣ ΕΠΙΒΙΩΣΗΣ ΤΟΥ ΑΕΡΟΣΑΚΟΥ ΧΙΟΝΟΣΤΙΒΑΔΩΝ ABS

 

Οι δέκα βασικές αρχές του αερόσακου χιονοστιβάδων ABS, αποδεικνύουν πόσο αποτελεσματικό είναι το σύστημα ABS και επιβεβαιώνουν ξεκάθαρα τους μεγάλους δείκτες επιβίωσης με τη χρήση του.

1. Υψηλότερος δείκτης επιβίωσης: Έρευνες που διεξήχθησαν από το 1991 από το ανεξάρτητο και διεθνούς φήμης Ελβετικό ινστιτούτο χιονοστιβάδων SLF(Swiss Avalanche Institute) στο Davos της Ελβετίας, έδειξαν ξεκάθαρα, ότι το σύστημα ABS μείωσε σημαντικά τον κίνδυνο να θαφτεί ένα ανθρώπινο σώμα εξαιτίας μιας χιονοστιβάδας. Τα αποτελέσματα των μελετών μιλούν από μόνα τους. Από τα 262 άτομα που ενεργοποίησαν τον αερόσακο, το 97 % επιβίωσε και το 84 % από αυτά χωρίς κανένα τραυματισμό. Αυτό κάνει το ABS το μόνο σύστημα αυτό-διάσωσης το οποίο αποδείξει την αποτελεσματικότητά του για πολλά χρόνια. Το ABS κάνει τη ζωή οκτώ φορές ασφαλέστερη για τους τουρίστες, τους σκιερ και για τους free riders.

 

2. Γερμανική τεχνολογία: Το επιστημονικό προσωπικό του ABS ασχολείται με την έρευνα και ανάπτυξη από το 1985 έχοντας στενή συνεργασία με επαγγελματίες στο χώρο του βουνού, πανεπιστήμια, ανεξάρτητα ιδρύματα και αθλητές ώστε να εξελίσσουν διαρκώς το σύστημα του αερόσακου. Βασιζόμενοι στην μεγάλη εμπειρία, πριν μεριά χρόνια το μονό σύστημα αερόσακου αντικαταστάθηκε με το αποτελεσματικότερο σύστημα διπλού αερόσακου. Αντικαταστάθηκε επίσης το μηχανικό καλώδιο ενεργοποίησης με το πολύ αποτελεσματικότερο σύστημα ενεργοποίησης πεπιεσμένου αέρα.

 

3. Διπλή ασφάλεια: Ο διπλός αερόσακος απέδειξε την ανωτερότητά του σε σχέση με τον μονό αερόσακο μέσα από πολυετής πρακτικές δοκιμές. Μια χιονοστιβάδα, προκαλεί μεγάλη καταπόνηση στον αερόσακο. Ακόμα και αν ο ένας από τους δύο αερόσακους έχει υποστεί βλάβη, συνήθως διατηρεί επαρκή όγκο ώστε να αποφευχθεί το θάψιμο του σώματος. Οι κατασκευαστές των μονών αερόσακων, μειώνουν το κόστος παραβλέποντας αυτό το πρακτικό και σημαντικό παράγοντα επιπρόσθετης ασφάλειας. Ο διπλός αερόσακος πλευρικής τοποθέτησης, είναι εύκαμπτος και κινείται μαζί με τη χιονοστιβάδα. Κατά συνέπεια, η μέγιστη απόδοση επιτυγχάνεται από τον όγκο και την άνοδο προς την επιφάνεια του χιονιού. Ο αερόσακος μειώνει τον στροβιλισμό του σώματος κατά την πτώση και έτσι εμποδίζονται οι σοβαροί τραυματισμοί.

 

 

 

4. Ενεργοποίηση με πεπιεσμένο αέρα: Τη στιγμή μιας καταστροφής, δεν υπάρχει χρόνος για λάθη και δυσλειτουργίες. Αυτός είναι ο λόγος που το ABS χρησιμοποιεί το πιο αξιόπιστο σύστημα ενεργοποίησης με πεπιεσμένο αέρα. Ένα γρήγορο τράβηγμα με μικρή δύναμη και το σύστημα φουσκώνει με τη ταχύτητα του ήχου. Ο ιμάντας ενεργοποίησης, χρησιμοποιεί ένα απλό σύστημα: η σκανδάλη ενεργοποίησης βρίσκεται σε θέση με άμεση πρόσβαση, και πάντοτε σε πλήρη ετοιμότητα.

 

5. Άμεση ενεργοποίηση: Για να δραπετεύσεις από μια χιονοστιβάδα, χρειάζεται καθαρό οπτικό πεδίο και ελευθερία κινήσεων. Αυτός είναι και ο λόγος που το ABS σχεδιάστηκε έτσι, ώστε να μπορεί να ενεργοποιείται χωρίς κανέναν δισταγμό από το πρώτο σημάδι ύπαρξης χιονοστιβάδας, χωρίς κανένα κίνδυνο να εμποδίσει τον χρήστη του. Λειτουργεί σαν ένα κομμάτι με το σώμα βοηθώντας να επιτευχθεί ο πρωταρχικός στόχος: να αποφευχθεί το θάψιμο στο χιόνι.

 

6. Δυναμικό αποτέλεσμα: Κατά τη διάρκεια μιας χιονοστιβάδας, τα υλικά που παρασύρει διαρκώς αναμιγνύονται. Τη στιγμή αυτής της ανάμιξης, τα μεγάλα αντικείμενα κινούνται προς την επιφάνεια. Ο αερόσακος σχεδιάστηκε με βάση αυτό το αποτέλεσμα. Τα δύο μέρη του διπλού αερόσακου, είναι τοποθετημένα στις πλευρές του σώματος, διατηρώντας το θύμα, όσο το δυνατόν πιο ψηλά στην επιφάνεια της χιονοστιβάδας.

 

7. Αποφυγή στροβιλισμών: Ο διπλός αερόσακος ABS, εμποδίζει το σώμα να έρθει σε ύπτια θέση η οποία είναι επικίνδυνη αφού αυτή εμποδίζει το θύμα να έχει οποιονδήποτε έλεγχο στη διάρκεια που παρασύρεται από τη χιονοστοιβάδα, και έτσι να μην είναι σε θέση να εμποδίσει την πρόκληση τραυματισμών από συγκρούσεις και βύθιση μέσα στο χιόνι.

 

8. Μέγιστη ορατότητα: Στο 97 % από τα καταγεγραμμένα ατυχήματα σε χιονοστιβάδες με χρήση αερόσακου, ο διπλός αερόσακος έμεινε ορατός στην επιφάνεια. Αυτό σημαίνει, ότι τα υπόλοιπα μέλη της ομάδας μπορούν να εντοπίσουν, που ακριβώς βρίσκεται το σώμα του θύματος και να μπορούν να τον απεγκλωβίσουν πολύ γρηγορότερα. Η μέγιστη ορατότητα σημαίνει ότι ο αερόσακος μειώνει τον διαφαινόμενο κίνδυνο να θαφτεί το θύμα.

 

9. Εύκολο πακετάρισμα και χρήση: Η διαδικασία για το πακετάρισμα του αερόσακου ABS, έχει βελτιωθεί σημαντικά μέσα στα 25 χρόνια πρακτικής χρήσης. Συγκρινόμενος με άλλους μονούς αερόσακους, ο διπλός αερόσακος ABS, είναι όχι μόνο γρηγορότερος αλλά κυρίως ευκολότερος και πιο αξιόπιστος στο να διπλωθεί.

 

10. Πάντοτε έτοιμο: Ο διπλός αερόσακος ABS πρέπει να είναι έτοιμος ανά πάσα στιγμή και σε κάθε περίπτωση που θα χρειαστεί να ενεργοποιηθεί και αυτό χωρίς κανένα συμβιβασμό. Αυτός είναι ο λόγος που ο αερόσακος ABS ενθαρρύνει την ενεργοποίηση για απλή πρακτική εξάσκηση πριν και κατά τη διάρκεια της χειμερινής περιόδου.
